With the advent of steel production in the late nineteenth century however, iron manufacture declined and the foundry closed in 1911. Over the ensuing decades the factory complex gradually fell into ruin; the ravine became a dumping ground and Foundry Cove a notorious Superfund clean-up site of cadmium pollution from a defunct battery plant.
